As an engagement photographer in Glasgow, Montana, I live for moments that you can’t plan, stage, or rehearse. Justin and Mariah’s surprise proposal at Fort Peck was one of those moments I’ll never forget.
I had already photographed Mariah’s sister’s wedding, so when Justin reached out with his plan to propose, I couldn’t say no. There’s something so special about being trusted to document another milestone within the same family. It feels like being invited back home. Only this time, the emotions are tenfold because no one else knows what’s about to happen.
It was a warm summer evening in July when Justin popped the question. The sun hung low over the lake, casting that golden light Montana is known for. Mariah thought we were there for a few updated family photos (nothing out of the ordinary!). But as soon as Justin dropped to one knee, everything stopped.
Her expression said it all. The laughter, the shock, the tears. Those genuine reactions are what make surprise engagements so rewarding to capture. It’s a few seconds of real life, preserved forever.
Fort Peck made the perfect backdrop for their moment. With soft ripples on the water and endless skies overhead, it had that mix of serenity and excitement that only Montana can deliver. The photos we created together tell a story that’s equal parts joy, disbelief, and deep love.
There’s something about engagements like this that keeps me inspired as a photographer. Every proposal carries its own kind of energy…nervous excitement, quiet anticipation, pure emotion. And in places like Fort Peck or the surrounding Glasgow area, that emotion seems to echo through the landscape itself.
Whether it’s the vast lake views, open fields, or the subtle calm of small-town Montana, each setting adds a layer of meaning to the story. You don’t need fancy setups or elaborate plans. All you need is a heartfelt moment and maybe a little golden light.
If you’re dreaming of a proposal that feels genuine and true to you, I’d love to help make it happen. As an engagement photographer in Glasgow, I know the hidden corners, quiet lookouts, and scenic spots around that make for unforgettable backdrops.
Whether you want something private and lowkey or a full surprise with family waiting nearby, I’ll help you plan and photograph the moment so you can focus on what matters most: asking the question and soaking in the joy that follows.
